Actual projects built with this tool

Real pieces, cut from files this studio produced - photographs of finished work, never renders. Where the maker has told us the material, the layer count and the size, they are under the picture.

A layered woodland scene in a black frame: a buck standing in a clearing with a turkey in the long grass, a bare tree overhead and a full moon over the hills behind.

Buck and turkey at moonrise

Every layer painted before assembly, which is what gives the sky its graduation.

A layered Halloween scene: trick-or-treaters in white sheets walking past a graveyard fence, ghosts among bare trees and a haunted house lit yellow behind, on purple and green layers.

Trick-or-treat

The lit windows are openings through to a painted layer behind rather than paint on the front.

A pumpkin-shaped layered piece, black on the outside, holding a haunted house, a witch on a broom and bare trees cut through to orange and green layers beneath.

Haunted pumpkin

A snowflake-shaped layered piece in blues and white, holding a winter village scene with a church, fir trees and a deer.

Snowflake village

A maple-leaf-shaped layered piece in natural wood, holding a scene of pine trees and hills under a crescent moon.

Maple leaf, moonlit pines

A maple-leaf-shaped layered piece in natural wood on a black background, standing on a small easel, with a turkey among ferns at its centre.

Maple leaf and turkey

A square layered panel in pale birch: a sugar skull at the centre surrounded by dense symmetrical flower and scroll work, inside a plain border.

Sugar skull in flowers

A square layered panel in plywood showing a sugar skull inside a dense border of flowers and scrolls, photographed against black.

Sugar skull, plywood

A square layered panel with a black frame and white and silver interior layers, showing a sugar skull surrounded by scrollwork and small flowers.

Sugar skull in white

A square layered panel in natural wood: a sunflower filling the frame, its seed head stepped down through several layers.

Sunflower

The same sunflower design painted: a black top layer over yellow, green and white layers, with the seed head picked out in grey.

Sunflower, painted

The same file as the one above, painted layer by layer instead of left bare.

A square layered panel in natural wood showing a butterfly over a honeycomb of hexagons, with pale blue showing through the deepest openings.

Butterfly on honeycomb

The same butterfly and honeycomb design with a black top layer over yellow, orange and green painted layers.

Butterfly on honeycomb, painted

A sea turtle cut as a layered piece in shades of teal and blue, the pattern of its shell stepped down through the layers.

Sea turtle

A layered piece shaped like an open book with its pages fanned, a winged dragon perched on the spine, cut in black and white and standing on a wooden table.

Dragon on an open book

A square layered panel in pale wood: a skull split down the middle by a lightning bolt, inside a stepped square border.

Skull and lightning bolt

The same square skull-and-lightning-bolt panel, stained: a dark brown frame and top layer over layers in honey and pale natural wood, so each ring round the skull and each step of the corner triangles stands out from the one beneath it.

Skull and lightning bolt, stained

The same design as Skull and lightning bolt, with the layers stained in shades from dark brown to pale instead of left bare.

A rectangular layered scene in a stained wooden frame: a skull with a lightning bolt inside a ring at the centre, a crescent moon, stars and a blazing sun in the sky, wavy bands sweeping down past pine trees, mountains and spotted mushrooms, and flowers and leaf shapes cut through the front layer.

Lightning skull under sun and moon

Two versions of the same layered panel on a workbench, one about twice the size of the other. A figure walks away from the viewer towards a long mountain lodge with rows of lit windows, pine trees and peaks behind it. Art-nouveau stems and irises frame the scene, and four small medallions around the edge hold two figures side by side, a typewriter, a hedge maze and an axe.

Mountain lodge

Cut twice from the same file at two sizes, which is the cheapest way to find out whether the finest cuts survive at the smaller one.
